"We call it 'ukulele soul,' " band leader Jon Hornyak says. "There's no guitar, no drums. It's all ukulele and vocals. It's a distinct sound."
It's also a distinctively Memphis sound, and audiences around the region have embraced this quirky band full of some of the city's most talented musicians.
The Memphis Ukulele Band covers several Hawaiian standards, of course, but their repertoire includes classic 50's tunes, some holiday songs, and even modern rock and pop. With the recent addition of some lovely original music, this band truly has something for everyone.
The ukulele is an instrument whose low volume and capacity to express a broad range of emotion make it one of the most intimate, evocative, and underrated stringed instruments. It’s fitting, then, that Memphis – also intimate, evocative, often underrated – is the setting for this band's magical collaboration.
The Memphis Ukulele Band is equally at home in small venues, country club ballrooms, and major festivals, where it's a unique audience treat. Please contact us for booking information.
